5 Ways To Increase Your Chances Of IVF Success

By Dr. Jesús Alberto Félix Atondo

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment can be both emotionally and physically demanding. There are a few steps you can take to increase your chances of a successful pregnancy, which will involve many phases that usually have an impact on different levels of the patient’s life. Feelings like uncertainty, hope, anxiety, and optimism may mix in the journey, along with body changes, so it’s important to be aware and p/repared for this assisted reproductive technique. Today, we will walk you through 5 key aspects to consider:

1. Prepare for Ovary Stimulation

IVF involves several steps: ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, sperm retrieval, fertilization, and embryo transfer. To become pregnant, a woman’s body needs to have a proper balance of reproductive hormones to produce and release a mature egg, which is normally once a month; but for a woman preparing to undergo In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), the chances of conceiving are higher if many mature eggs can be retrieved at once – and that’s exactly what ovarian stimulation does through various options of medication.

Being the first one, this step is very important, which is why you should feel comfortable with the clinic and the doctor you choose, as they’ll accompany you and give you medical guidance. Also, they can redirect you to an emotional support expert if you need it. As all this happens at a hormonal level, bloating, mood swings, having an increased appetite, gastrointestinal changes and other side effects may be expected.

2. Reduce Your Stress Levels

Feeling relaxed and tranquil can boost your chances of getting pregnant, which is why doctors recommend avoiding any activities or scenarios that can cause stress, both mentally or physically. Activities like yoga, meditation, and other low-impact activities, like long walks, can increase blood flow to important reproductive organs. Any activity that helps you disconnect and focus on your body, breath, and positive thoughts can help! By not doing so, there’s a risk of stress affecting:

  • Ovulation.
  • Cortisol levels.
  • Testosterone levels.
  • Sperm count and motility.
  • The implantation of a fertilized egg.
  • The fallopian tubes and uterus by creating spams.

3.Always Take Your Medication On Time

The IVF process itself requires the use of medication on a precisely timed schedule. One day can make a huge difference in how your body reacts, could be a great response or a bad one if you don’t have a routine to take your medication in the indicated moments. Being consistent and organized is a must in infertility treatments to achieve your goals.

The process starts on the first day of the patient’s menstrual cycle:

  • From days 1 – 4. There’s an appointment that includes an ultrasound and bloodwork. If everything is in order, the woman will start hormone injections, as well as other complementary medications.
  • From days 5 – 10. The ovary stimulation continues and the patient may start the medication to prevent premature ovulation. Regular monitoring is usually done in this period.
  • From day 10, onwards. Patients will receive a final ultrasound and bloodwork to confirm if the egg has reached maturity. If so, a “trigger shot” will be applied before retrieval.
  • IVF Transfer. After transfer, the women will be supplied with progesterone supplements, which will provide hormonal support for the embryo to successfully attach to the uterine lining. Within 2 weeks, a blood sample will be taken to determine if the transfer resulted in a pregnancy.

4. Choose a Clinic With a Certified and Avant-Garde IVF Lab Technology

We recommend you choose a clinic that has a certified and technologically advanced laboratory. The certifications are very important because they are the best background for you to know that you are in a safe and regulated place. The technology used in the laboratory is fundamental, as it is the place where life will be created, so all tools must be used precisely by a Biologist and the specialty medical team involved.

5. Incorporate or Maintain Healthy Habits

Being in shape – both mentally and physically – is essential for your IVF journey:

  • Get into a healthy weight. Be sure that your diet is rich in leafy greens, lean meats, whole grains, and vegetables, among other things. Avoid sugary drinks, fried foods, refined carbohydrates, and alcoholic beverages.
  • Exercising. Low-impact activities like swimming and walking are great, as they can be relaxing at the same time they maintain your body active while being easy on your joints.
  • Limit your caffeine intake. It is ideal to avoid caffeine altogether when undergoing fertility treatment, however, if cutting it is too difficult, we recommend patients limit their intake to one or a maximum of 2 cups of coffee a day.
  • Take supplements. Prenatal vitamins are a good choice to increase your intake of key nutrients during the IVF cycle: Folic acid, vitamin D, and fish oil supplements are great; be sure to ask your doctor for recommendations of the best options according to your needs.
