Food is fuel to your body, and eating properly gives you energy to do everything. The food you consume influences hormone & semen production, egg count & quality, and the quality of your uterine lining – which is why it plays an important role in the success of your IVF treatment from the beginning.

Best Foods For IVF Success

Some of the best foods during an IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) treatment are:

  • Whole grains: quinoa, whole grain pasta, brown rice.
  • Healthy fats and foods containing zinc to support progesterone: avocado, nuts & seeds, and extra virgin olive oil.
  • Lean proteins and omega-3: fish and chicken.
  • Legumes: beans, chickpeas and lentils.
  • Veggies for estrogen balance and fiber: Cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage.
  • Soy products: soy milk, tofu, and edamames.
  • Nitrates to boost blood flow: Garlic, pomegranates, and beets.

Foods That Support IVF Implantation

An anti-inflammatory diet is fundamental in IVF success, meaning that before and during the treatment it is ideal to minimize the intake of processed foods, fast foods, fried foods, and sugar. Some of the most beneficial foods to aid the implantation process are:

  • Pineapple. We are going to start with a fruit that has become a popular symbol of fertility. It has a type of enzyme called bromelain, which thickens the uterine lining and also improves blood flow to the uterus. It is full of nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin B types, magnesium and potassium. It is recommended to eat it whole since the concentration of bromelain is more.

Foods To Avoid If You’re Trying To Get Pregnant

These foods help your overall health, and can be especially beneficial to your IVF treatment. Eating poorly puts you at risk of developing health issues that can be an obstacle when trying to conceive or even be detrimental for your pregnancy. Keeping this in mind, its best to avoid:

  • Raw or half-cooked seafood. Raw or half-cooked seafood such as sushi or shrimp contains high levels of mercury which causes problems with the development of the baby and may result in birth defects.
  • Egg in raw form. Eggs in raw form are frequently used in many food products such as mayonnaise and salad dressing. However, they contain a germ called salmonella, which can cause food poisoning; this is why it is very important to cook them well before eating.
  • Alcohol. Drinking can cause changes in ovulation, cycle regulation and ovarian reserve. It can also prevent proper implantation in the uterus – leading to an increased rate of early loss of the pregnancy.
  • High-sugar foods. Soda, candies, fruit yogurts, breakfast cereals, cakes with frosting, ice-cream, milkshakes, ketchup, bbq sauce, among others.
  • Processed foods. Pizza, hamburgers, fried foods, savoury snacks, chips, sausages, microware-ready foods. Usually, this type of food has unhealthy levels of sugar, sodium, fat, and artificial preservatives that can lead to several health issues like obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
