What Is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) And How Does It Work?

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is one of the most effective and popular assisted reproduction methods due to its high success rates (65 – 95%). With this technique, egg fertilization occurs in a laboratory; the resulting embryo is transferred into the woman’s uterus, allowing pregnancy. IVF offers a chance at parenthood to couples who would be otherwise unable to conceive due to infertility problems such as blocked or absent fallopian tubes or low sperm counts.

Who Can Benefit From An In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?

The best reproductive capacity is usually between 20 to 30 years. After 35, age becomes a factor for infertility, meaning in-vitro fertilization could be a viable option. However, there are a number of factors involved in determining if a patient is suitable for IVF treatment, as the case of patients with:

  • Advanced endometriosis.
  • Ovulation disorders.
  • Low sperm counts.
  • Blocked fallopian tubes.
  • Contraceptive surgery (tubal ligation, vasectomy).
  • Other health of unexplained reproductive issues.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Process

Before beginning a cycle of IVF in Mexico, you and your partner will likely need various screenings, including:

  • Ovarian reserve testing. To determine the quantity and quality of the women’s eggs.
  • Semen analysis. To examine the number, shape, and mobility of the male’s sperm.
  • Infectious disease screening. To discard the presence of diseases like HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and hepatitis, among others.
  • Practice embryo transfer. To determine the conditions of the uterine cavity.
  • Uterine exam. To analyze the conditions of the uterus; this might involve a sonohysterography, an ultrasound, or a hysteroscopy.

Once the necessary screenings are done, the IVF is performed. The procedure consists of 5 steps:

  • Ovarian Stimulation

It consists of the application of medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs (instead of the single egg that normally develops each month) – this is necessary because not all eggs will be fertilized.

  • Egg retrieval

Also known as follicular aspiration, it involves obtaining the produced eggs through a simple surgical procedure (which involves a needle connected to a suction device); once retrieved, they are reviewed and prepared for fertilization (this is done by an embryologist).

  • Fertilization

There are two methods through which fertilization can be attempted:

  • Conventional Insemination. Sperm and eggs are mixed and incubated.
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). A single healthy sperm is injected directly into each mature egg (this is used when the semen quality or volume is a problem).

  • Embryo culture

An optimal environment is created for the culture of human embryos; those fertilized eggs will continue to grow in the laboratory for up to 6 days before being transferred into the uterus.

  • Transfer

The embryos are placed in the uterus using a catheter – usually, two or more are transferred with the hopes that at least one will develop. Sometimes more than one embryo ends up implanting, which is why multiples are common in women who undergo an IVF treatment (the number of embryos must be discussed with your doctor beforehand). Each transference offers pregnancy rates greater than 70% and a cumulative rate of 94% in three attempts. The next step after the In Vitro Fertilization is getting a pregnancy test to see if the procedure was successful. If there are leftover embryos, they can be frozen for future attempts.

Traveling to Mexico in search of health services has become an increasingly common practice among Americans to access highly specialized fertility treatments, at a much lower price compared the US.

Tijuana, Mexico is a city recognized for its enormous offer in health services, not only for the large number of specialists ready to serve tourists from all over the world, particularly from the US. It is characterized for being a safe city, with hospitals located near the international airport and the border, and with a lot of surveillance by the authorities.

Likewise, tourists can find special accommodation plans for the patient´s comfort in order to be comfortable and safe during their stay in Mexico. If you choose to go to The Fertility Center for your fertility treatment, you will find all the facilities in NewCity Medical Plaza, the place where we are located. From shopping centers, restaurants, to a hotel, a fully equipped hospital, laboratory and all the services you need.

Finally, traveling to Tijuana from the United States and Canada is convenient and easy. The flight is approximately 8 hours for people traveling from Canada, Chicago and New York, and just 30 minutes from Los Angeles.

Although each case is different, at The Fertility Center we have created a timeline for our patients to consider the estimated period they should remain in Mexico.

From the second or third day of menstruation, you must attend the clinic to begin ovarian stimulation, a process that lasts approximately 14 days, of which you must visit the clinic to be monitored 5 to 6 times in a period of two weeks.

On day 15 after ovarian stimulation, ovule capture is performed under anesthesia and the sperm is injected with the extracted ovules.

In a period of between five and seven days after the extraction, the specialists carry out the embryonic culture with the ovules and sperm.
If a genetic analysis is required, 30 days are added to this process to carry out the pertinent studies.

After the culture has been carried out, you must return to the clinic for the embryo transfer process, which is quick, simple and does not require rest, so you can return home.

Two weeks after the embryo transfer it is recommended to perform a blood pregnancy test to verify the process success.
